After being imprisoned and beaten for his ideas and writings, Voltaire understood that one way to explain the craziness of government and society is through humor and exaggeration. Voltaire disagreed with this philosophy, so he made the characters in this book go through ridiculous crap (torture, jail, lost love, losing an ear, that kind of thing) to get his point across. This was a popular way of looking at life at the time. Candide is a satire – it makes fun of the idea that whatever way things work out for you, it’s the best way.
